Want Long-Lasting Dentures? Avoid These Habits!

October 1, 2024

It makes sense to want long-lasting dentures – they’re a kind of investment, after all, and they significantly improve your oral function. You might want to know, then, that certain habits will prematurely wear out your false teeth! Keep reading to find out which ones so you can avoid them.

Biting Your Nails

Both your dentures and your nails are made out of some pretty tough stuff. Just because your nail might break if you gnaw on it long enough doesn’t mean that your dentures are tougher, though. They probably won’t crack immediately, but over time, your nails will chip away at the material, throwing off their size and fit.

Chewing Gum

All types of chewing gum are sticky – that’s kind of the point. Normally this stickiness wouldn’t pose too much of a problem as you bite down and lift, but dentures can get pulled right off your oral gums mid-sentence. Avoid the hassle and potential damage by sticking to breath mints or denture-friendly mouthwash.

Falling Asleep with Your Dentures

It’s important to wear your dentures daily, but not nightly! For one thing, your gums need a break to stay happy and healthy so they can support your prosthetic. For another thing, if you grind your teeth in your sleep, you could cause the same kind of wear as chewing on a fingernail.

Skipping Cleaning Sessions

Keeping your natural and false teeth clean is essential for your oral health and the longevity of your dentures. Without daily hygiene, surface stains could become permanent, your dentures will start to stink, and you’ll be at increased risk for developing gum disease. If gum disease settles into your pink oral supports, it could very well affect the fit and stability of your dentures. So stick to a twice-daily cleaning routine and regular dental checkups!

Wearing Broken or Ill-Fitting Dentures

You might look at a set of slightly cracked or ill-fitting dentures, shrug, and put them in your mouth. This is not advised – and neither are DIY repairs! Wearing compromised dentures could harm your soft oral tissues or result in further damage, and at-home fixes could make the problem worse.

If your dentures do break, call your dentist to see if it’s safe to re-insert them. If their shape no longer works for you, schedule an adjustment appointment so they can restore your comfort. If you simply want more tips for maintaining pristine dentures, don’t hesitate to ask questions! As your oral health professional, they’d be happy to help you ensure your prosthetic’s longevity.
